Big Changes to Childcare Fees in Alberta: What Parents Need to Know

Starting April 1, 2025, the Alberta government is changing how childcare fees work across the province. If you’re a parent searching for daycare, it’s important to understand these updates and how they will affect your family.

The goal of this new system is to make childcare more affordable and predictable for parents while giving daycares more flexibility. So, what exactly is changing?

New Flat Fees for Childcare

Under the new system, most licensed childcare providers—including Pathway Kids—will now charge a flat monthly fee:

• $326.25/month for full-time care (over 100 hours per month) – This works out to about $15 per day

• $230/month for part-time care (50-99 hours per month)

For families, this means consistent, predictable pricing across different daycare providers.

What to Watch Out For

With this new funding approach, there are a few important things to keep in mind as you plan for childcare:

• Flat Fees for All Families – The new model means most licensed daycares, including Pathway Kids, will charge the same standard rate set by the province.

• Additional Fees May Apply – While the base fee is standardized, daycares may charge extra for optional services, programs, or supplies. Be sure to ask about any additional costs.

• Subsidies Are No Longer Available – Under this new system, the traditional parental subsidy program based on family income has been discontinued. Families will no longer need to apply for subsidies, as the new model provides a single, set rate for all.
